State Performance - Good Governance and the Rule of Law

Public institutions need to perform in an open and responsive manner. Administrative reform, decentralisation and local empowerment are integral to the concept of good governance. These are meant to improve:

  • the efficiency and transparency of the institutions
  • the representation of the citizens
  • the responsiveness of local structures

A more credible, efficient and participatory public service helps to consolidate democratic systems, as do increased accountability and efficient anti-corruption strategies. Developing and defining concepts and methodologies of good governance as well as assisting in the implementation of these concepts are areas of BiRD's activities.
